Capture Thyme: A Photography Blog

Summer of Family, Photos, and Personal Growth!

This summer, I embarked on a journey that took me from the bustling streets of Chicago to the serene shores of Tacoma and the vibrant culture of Seattle. It was a trip filled with laughter, introspection, and unforgettable moments with loved ones. While capturing the beauty of these cities through my lens was a joy, the real treasure was the connection I felt with family and friends along the way. Here’s a glimpse into my travels and the unique personalities of each city.

Chicago, IL:

Nostalgia and New Beginnings

Spring of 2024 marked a significant moment as Jade, my sibling, embarked on a new adventure in Chicago. Our time together was a beautiful blend of nostalgia and fresh experiences, each moment adding to the tapestry of our shared history. We headed straight to the beach where Jade meticulously sifted through the sand, creating a zen garden from found objects—a testament to their creative and centering nature. This peaceful activity was more than just play; it encapsulated our sibling bond and reminded us of the simple joys we often overlook in life.

Our visit to Devon Market was another highlight. The market’s lively atmosphere made us feel like spectators in a vibrant dance of life. The hustle and bustle were exhilarating, with the scent of fresh Shawarma and a dazzling array of desserts tempting us from every corner. We couldn't resist trying a bubble jug—a quirky novelty filled with powder that turns into gum. The hilarity that ensued as we attempted to transform the sour powder into gum was a delightful throwback to our childhood, filled with infectious giggles and lighthearted fun.

Together we celebrated and anticipated amidst the glowing lights of lightning bugs and the sharp scent of sulfur from Fourth of July fireworks that filled the streets of Chicago. Our quest for the best burritos in Rogers Park became an adventure in itself, as we looked into the windows of local eateries. The nights ran late, filled with deep conversations and ambitious dreams of rally racing.

Witnessing Jade’s transition into this new phase of life inspired a mix of emotions. It was exciting to experience Chicago from a street-level perspective, the city's vastness and energy providing a stark contrast to our quieter moments. The city's skyline, cultural richness, and the unspoken promise of countless opportunities felt almost palpable. As we talked about our aspirations and fears, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of pride and anticipation for what the future holds for Jade. The experience left me eager to return and explore more, not just as a visitor, but as a sibling cheering on a loved one from the sidelines.

Tacoma, WA:

Serene Retreats and Spiritual Journeys

My arrival in Tacoma was marked by the warmest of welcomes from my bestie, Amanda. Their home, surrounded by a growing grove of trees and filled with beautifully maintained aquascapes, was an oasis of peace and comfort. It was the perfect setting to unwind after the cross-country flight, a journey that left me more exhausted than I had anticipated. Despite the allure of our first stop, Snoqualmie Falls, I found myself too tired to fully appreciate the picturesque tourist spot. Instead, we opted for a long nap and an evening of delicious Thai food, and anime together with her Husband, Alex.

The next day, with my energy restored, we set out to explore Tacoma. Amanda's gentle and thoughtful nature made every moment feel special. We indulged in delicious vegetarian dishes at Zola's Cafe, a cozy spot that quickly became a favorite. One of the most memorable parts of our adventure was meeting Eliot on the beach. This kind gentleman, curious about my photography, turned out to be an unexpected guide. He shared fascinating facts about the local marine life, including clams, black oystercatchers, and a pair of newly arrived purple starfish. Eliot's knowledge and enthusiasm added a delightful layer to our beach outing, making it an experience I won't soon forget.

Our journey took us to the Museium of Glass and metaphysical shops in Tacoma, where we marveled at the crystals, books, and spiritual tools. It was a day filled with exploration and discovery, both outward and inward. Amanda later treated me to a personalized tarot reading and prepared a cord-cutting ritual to use at home. This experience was profound and deeply personal, helping me prepare for the next steps in my life. It was a moment of reflection and renewal, a chance to let go of past energies and embrace new possibilities.

Our days were filled with serene adventures, visiting additional waterfalls and exploring historic cemeteries. Each location offered a unique glimpse into the natural beauty and rich history of the area. It was special to explore nature and indulge in deep conversations about self-understanding and the new freedoms we were embracing in our lives. Her insights into spiritual balance and radical acceptance have always made me feel like part of her family, a connection that is both comforting and grounding.

Seattle, WA:

A Vibrant Tapestry of Senses and Connections

Our final stop was Seattle, where I reunited with my Uncle Rama and his partner, Isabel. Their energy and love were contagious, infusing every moment with vibrancy and joy. Isabel’s impeccable taste in art and music added a special touch to our time together. Rama, despite being just ten years older than me, has been a unique and influential figure in my life. He often jokes about the oddity of being an uncle at ten, but for me, it’s been a privilege to witness his journey into such a collected and wise person.

Our Seattle adventure was a whirlwind of activities. We kicked off our reunion at Fremont Brewery, a local favorite that set the tone for a relaxed and joyous day. From there, we explored the iconic Fremont Troll, wandered through the farmers market, and marveled at the eclectic treasures of Mudlark Oddities. Day two was a deep dive into Seattle's rich history, starting with a tour by “Under the Streets,” which uncovered the hidden layers of the city’s shopping district.

The city was experiencing the hottest week of the summer, with temperatures soaring into the high 80s and 90s. Finding cool drinks and air-conditioned havens became an adventure in itself. After a day of exploration at the Aquarium and Pike Place Market we savored sweet relief at Happy Lemon, where the scent of freshly made waffles was an olfactory delight. The air was thick with the aroma of wildflowers and gardens, adding sweet fragrances to many parts of our journey.

One of the highlights was our visit to the Seattle Public Library. The building's striking architecture and the treasure trove of artist archives and resources made it a haven for the curious and the creative. I could have spent hours lost in the stacks, soaking in the wealth of knowledge and artistic inspiration. Unfortunately, the impending departure of my flight cut our visit short, but the experience left a lasting impression.

Our trip ended on a high note with a refreshing swim in Lake Washington, a perfect antidote to the summer heat. We made a final stop at Archie McPhee’s, where we picked up quirky souvenirs, each item a whimsical reminder of our time together. As we said our goodbyes, the reality of leaving this vibrant city and my beloved family hit me. Yet, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the moments shared and the memories created.

Reflections and Gratitude!

As I prepared for this trip, I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. The idea of immersing myself in new experiences and traveling to my family and friends brought up feelings of vulnerability. But this journey taught me the beauty of trust and the importance of asking for help. It reminded me of the gratitude I feel for the people in my life and the courage to face fears head-on. This summer wasn’t just about exploring new places; it was about deepening my connections and embracing the unexpected with an open heart.
